Co-living research in Milan.
The following work springs from the necessity and awareness of the need of an innovative conception of housing, shifting from a functional concept of house as an object to the cultural concept of dwelling as an experience.
The renewal and transformation of the existing housing stock came to the front scene to be modified and to satisfy quantitative and qualitative needs of contemporary living.
The Studio started with an analysis of contemporary living conditions in Milan, identifying innovative aspects and new tendencies, analysing the levels of privacy in the house and the type of inhabitants. A database of cases was collected among the students, distinguishing different nucleuses and housing types.
The second part of the work consisted in the application of the research in an existing context.
This was the case of a building still in construction, in a delicate post-industrial neighbourhood in the North of Milan, renovated recently and with scarce social activities. The municipality in partnership with a private investor, will develop a multifunctional building, home for the elderly, the disabled, social housing and temporary housing, providing several facilities for the whole district, as ambulatories and recreational services.
The aim is to create a type of living to satisfy the needs for temporary social housing, a project of Milano municipality to give house to the refugees, the homeless in need of a short-term allocation.
Services as kitchen, bathrooms and leisure activities spaces are common, as each dweller has its own private area in a room, which limits are blurred by a system of sliding and rotating panels. Playing with privacy levels and living activities, we were able to create a collection of different solutions.
